With RudderStack you don’t have to worry about data volumes day in day out

You get to focus on building the product. Plus having the entire platform hosted on our internal platforms help us manage the data better. You don’t need to worry about data privacy and you can always tweak the platform according to your own needs.

Why use RudderStack

Segment (and most competitors) charge by MTUs (Monthly Tracked Users) and Events. Unfortunately, the per-unit economics of MTU or events varies a lot depending on the industry. As an example, CISCO probably associates a much higher value for a user than a free to play consumer game so a price point that would work for the former would certainly not work for the latter. As a result, lot of folks are left out of the product.

Furthermore, because of this pricing model, companies often have to do weird things to minimize their MTU or event budget, for example, track fewer events OR not track anonymous users. We have consistently seen this pain point across all our customer conversations. At RudderStack, we believe that companies should be able to track as many events as possible without paying exorbitant amounts. Our open-source product is completely free to use while our paid offering is also priced on a fixed platform fee.

At RudderStack, we are building the best product for the developer & data -engineer persona. Whether that means, our free to use open-source product to a flat pricing fee for our hosted infra, from Docker to Kubernetes scripts to deploy RudderStack, to all the content we write around RudderStack and downstream applications – our goal is to provide the best product & content experience for engineers and developers.
It is increasingly a good practice to “control” your customer data particularly if it contains PI (and regulations like CCPA/GDPR have broadened PI quite a bit to even include cookies). Furthermore, fulfilling data requests or deleting data is much simpler when one has direct access to the data. With Segment and other competitors, you have to rely on them to successfully delete the record from their internal systems. Backup storage etc.

Segment and other competitors keep a copy of the data and provide tools to act on that. This results in the creation of another data silo that is very hard to move out of. Is creating another Safeway Deli the best way to address this problem?

Once companies become large, they want to do more complicated things with the data – anything from doing custom analytics in a BI too of choice to building advanced ML/AI algorithms for optimizing the product and user experience. These complicated use cases are much easier to build on top of a data-warehouse like Snowflake or RedShift or Bigquery as opposed to a cloud DB as a service.

Existing products like Segment too give a data-warehouse dump but it’s not designed to scale to this kind of use case.
